I used my app Count-Dice to let my kids practice to recognize number of dots without counting (i.e., subitizing). The app is configured with three modes, including "Warmup", "Basic", and "Advanced".
The modes "Warmup" and "Basic" are used for subitizing.
The "Advanced" mode provides two groups of dots, which helps with the transition from subitizing to Continuous Counting.
Continuous counting is a crucial early math skill that bridges subitizing—the ability to recognize quantities instantly—and more advanced concepts like addition and multiplication. It helps children develop a deeper understanding of numbers, patterns, and the relationship between quantities and numerical values.

Why Continuous Counting is Important
How to calculate 5 + 3?
We draw 5 dots, and then draw 3 more.
Kids first recognize either 5 dots or 3 dots, then keep counting from either 6 or 4.
Continuous counting is an essential skill that supports several aspects of early math development:
- Enhances Subitizing Skills: Recognizing patterns and counting continuously builds on a child’s ability to subitize, which is foundational for quick mental calculations.
- Strengthens Number Sense: Continuous counting helps kids understand numerical relationships, such as how numbers build upon one another.
- Prepares for Advanced Concepts: It lays the groundwork for understanding addition, multiplication, and place value by encouraging children to group and organize numbers logically.
Practicing continuous counting also improves children’s confidence in math and their ability to analyze and solve problems efficiently.
To support this important transition, I’ve developed the Multi-Dice Match & Connect app, which combines interactive activities with customizable settings to make learning engaging and effective.
Multi-Dice Match & Connect
This app is designed to strengthen children’s continuous counting skills while reinforcing their ability to subitize and connect numbers to quantities.
Key Features:
- Customizable Settings:
- Set the maximum dot count on a die (up to 10) to adjust the difficulty level.
- Choose the number of dice in a group (from 2 to 4) to create engaging challenges.
- Interactive Activities:
- Kids practice recognizing dot patterns and counting continuously across multiple dice.
- The activity encourages them to connect the total number of dots with numerical values, reinforcing their understanding of number representation.
By combining visual aids, hands-on interaction, and adjustable difficulty levels, this app provides a fun and effective way to build foundational math skills.

Transitioning to Higher Math Skills
Continuous counting serves as a stepping stone to more advanced math concepts:
- Addition and Subtraction: By practicing continuous counting, kids develop an intuitive understanding of combining and separating quantities, a key component of these operations.
- Multiplication and Division: Recognizing patterns in continuous counting helps children grasp concepts like grouping and sharing, which are fundamental to multiplication and division.
- Mental Math and Problem-Solving: Continuous counting trains children to think quickly and make connections, skills essential for tackling real-world math problems.
Building Math Confidence through Fun and Practice
The Multi-Dice Match & Connect app empowers kids to practice continuous counting in a way that’s enjoyable and engaging. By using visual tools and interactive activities, children can strengthen their math foundation and seamlessly transition to more advanced skills.
Start practicing continuous counting today and watch your child’s confidence and math abilities grow!
